Fcgid and phpmyadmin 403 permission denied error

If you installed fcgi and got 403 error when trying to run phpmyadmin, you just need to add one thing and it is to edit /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf to add +ExecCGI in the section

<Directory /usr/share/phpmyadmin>
Options FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI
DirectoryIndex index.php
....

Remove root user access

Having root user access available is good foundation to have your website(s) or server hijacked. Why well they know username they need to just go through different passwords to try and guess and belive me people do have software and servers doing this so they can gain something out of that theft. Today I just checked my log files and saw some chineese IP's trying to break in. Really what could I do if they do, just cry about it. So first step is remove root user.

So we create new username when logged in as root.

adduser new_user

Fcgid settings on Apache

If you are using fcgi and mpm-worker mode with your apache. You will probably need to set some variables to make your drupal sites work. As they have some stupid defaults like 128kb upload limit (really 128 kb today?) and they override your php.ini settings as now PHP is running trough this FCGI, then you need to go to
/etc/apache2/mods-available/fcgid.conf if there is where your FCGID mod is installed and then change conf file. Just add simple line of with your number of bytes

FcgidMaxRequestLen 1073741824

Memcache and admin

If you are planing to do some optimization for your server, I would recommend to use memcache at least for your drupal admin pages. When installed it will cache some vital tables that will make faster your admin, even if you use boost and static pages for all your content and your visitors, install this module, it is rather easy this days to do it.

Memcache setting for drupal 7

There is some slight change in default settings.php memcached setting for drupal 7, here is the setting you need to add to bottom of your file and you are ready to go.

$conf['cache_backends'][] = 'sites/all/modules/memcache/memcache.inc';
$conf['cache_default_class'] = 'MemCacheDrupal';
$conf['memcache_key_prefix'] = 'TD';

Apache, higher performance - MPM worker and Fcgid

After reading on many places that drupal should work better with MPM-worker and fcgid I decided to swith my debain to that configuration. For that I had to do the usuall, collect the info around the web and hope for the best. So here goes information about this on Debian Linux.

First we need to install worker and FastCGI

apt-get install apache2-mpm-worker libapache2-mod-fcgid

then enable

a2enmod fcgid

then some more install

aptitude install php5-cgi php5-cli

Creating SFTP user for easy SFTP access (limit user to a single directory)

This is more or less what you need

http://library.linode.com/security/sftp-jails

Just add user before with useradd and then add this as on the link before.

MySQL Tuner

I just installed mysql tuner to try and tune mysql,

Hopeing it helps with drupal and hogging of apache.

Drupal site and how to manually put it offline

Go to phpmyadmin and start this 2 commands

put site offline
UPDATE variable SET value='s:1:"1"' WHERE name = 'site_offline'
put site online
UPDATE variable SET value='s:1:"0"' WHERE name = 'site_offline

depending what you need, if you have drush you could also do that with drush.

Find files or directories on linux

Trying to locate some directory or file, use

find / -name 'drush'

or

find / -iname 'drush'

to ignore case.
